Two of the most exciting Lightweights in the history of the division are now set to clash in September.
Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone will take on former World Series of Fighting Lightweight champion Justin Gaethje in the main event of UFC Fight Night 168 (otherwise known as UFC on ESPN+ 16). The bout was announced late Wednesday evening Yahoo’s Kevin Iole.
Cerrone (36-12, 23-9 in UFC) is coming off a disappointing TKO defeat to top contender Tony Ferguson back in June. The loss snapped a three-fight winning streak that highlighted two solid wins over Al Iaquinta and Alexander Hernandez at Lightweight. Cerrone otherwise enjoyed a short stint at Welterweight, going 5-5 inside the division. Of his 32 UFC appearances to date, Cerrone has earned a performance bonus in 15 of them.
Gaethje (20-2, 3-2 in UFC) is currently riding a two-fight winning streak after garnering impressive victories over James Vick and Edson Barboza, both of which came by way of knockout or TKO. Gaethje is presently ranked at No. 5 just under a Donald Cerrone and a win would place Gaethje in the discussion of potential Lightweight contender should he win impressively. Of Gaethje’s 20 career wins, 17 have come by way of knockout or TKO.
UFC on ESPN+ 16 takes place at the Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada on September 14 and will stream exclusively on ESPN+.
