Reigning UFC Light Heavyweight champion Jon Jones is continuing to keep himself busy as he quickly takes on a new challenge in the form of Brazilian striker Thiago Santos in his next title defense.
Announced Wednesday afternoon, UFC 239 now has its main event as Jon “Bones” Jones will defend his UFC Light Heavyweight title against Thiago Santos in the second title defense of his second reign.
Jones (24-1, 18-1 in UFC) most recently defeated Anthony Smith at UFC 232 by way of unanimous judges decision at the start of March. Prior to this, Jones reclaimed the Light Heavyweight title by defeating Alexander Gustaffson in a rematch of their Fight of the Year bout at UFC 165. Jones had relinquished his title during his first reign due to a series of controversial events that garnered Jones legal and professional trouble.
Santos (21-6, 13-5 in UFC) is currently 3-0 since moving up to Light Heavyweight after a five-year stint at Middleweight. His three wins include Eryk Anders, Jimi Manuwa and most recently Jan Blachowicz. Santos called out Jones following his latest win and is currently ranked third in the division. Of Santos’ 21 career wins, 15 have come by way of knockout.
UFC 239 takes place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on July 6 and will air live on pay per view, The bout will serve as the main event.
