Two of the top Lightweights in the Ultimate Fighting Championship will meet in Canada’s capital in the promotions next visit up north.
MMA Fighting’s Marc Raimondi confirmed with sources that Donald “Cowbow” Cerrone and “Raging” Al Iaquinta have verbally agreed to meet in the main event of UFC Ottawa at Canadian Tire Centre on May 4. The bout was first reported by ESPN.
Cerrone (35-11, 22-8 in UFC) last competed at the debut event for the UFC’s debut event with ESPN+ in January when he returned to the Lightweight division after a short stint at Welterweight where the Colorado-born fighter registered a 6-4 record. He defeated rising up-and-comer Alexander Hernandez by way of TKO in the second round. As of late, many rumors have swirled suggesting that the UFC was looking to make a bout between Cerrone and former Lightweight and Featherweight champion Conor McGregor. Cerrone was in favor of the matchup but accused McGregor of dodging the matchup as it was unlikely to serve as the main event for any potential card that it would serve on.
Iaquinta (14-4-1, 9-3 in UFC) most recently garnered a big decision victory over fellow top ranked contender Kevin Lee. Prior to this, Iaquinta had lost a decision victory against Khabib on short notice in a Lightweight championship fight. This will be Iaquinta’s first trip to The Great White North. The New York native has won six of his last seven fights.
UFC on ESPN+ 8 will take place at the Canadien Tire Centre in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada on May 4 and will stream on ESPN+.
