The UFC’s first Peruvian champion is set to defend her newly acquired UFC Flyweight championship for the first time.
Rumored initially by ESPN’s Brett Okamoto, Valentina Shevchenko vs. Jessica Eye for the UFC women’s Flyweight title was announced by the promotion on Monday morning and will take place at UFC 238 in Chicago, Illinois.
Shevchenko (16-3, 5-2 in UFC) most recently attained the Flyweight title last December when she beat former UFC Strawweight champion Joanna Jędrzejczyk for the vacant crown at UFC 231. Shevchenko’s lone two losses come at Bantamweight against reigning Bantamweight and Featherweight champion Amanda Nunes. She made her Flyweight debut in February of 2018 when she dominated Priscila Cachoeira en route to a TKO victory.
Eye (14-6, 4-5 in UFC) has recently experienced a career resurgence since moving down to her original weight class of Flyweight back in 2018. Eye has racked up three straight wins against Kalindra Faria, Jessica-Rose Clark and Katlyn Chookagian. Before entering the UFC as a Bantamweight, Eye competed at Flyweight and went 7-1 overall in the division.
UFC 238 takes place at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois on June 8 and will air live on pay per view. No confirmation yet as to whether the women’s Flyweight matchup will serve as the headliner.
