Cage Wars New York, The Amateur Fighters Path to Greatness.

By: Ben Field

On Saturday, November 24th, I had the pleasure of attending Cage Wars 39. The entire card was phenomenal, from the first fight where we saw Bob Buskey’s first round KO of Shane Seccombe, all the way to the Main Event, which was a three round war between Toronto Top Team’s Teshay Gouthro and MVMMA’s Nyein Maung. Gouthro’s superior striking and grappling not only lead to the most dominant performance of the night, but to him capturing the Cage Wars 135 lb belt.

For me, the biggest take away from the fight was the heart and chin of Hailey Hoard. Even though she fell victim to a second round armbar, the toughness she presented, along with her never say die attitude, proved to me that one day, she will compete at the highest level of the sport. The same can be said for her opponent, Elise Reed. Elise’s pressure and takedown defense was top of line, and that was the key to her locking in that armbar which helped her claim the throne at the top of Cage War’s Atomweight division.

The main card also saw two other first round finishes as Mike Doolen made quick work of Scott Hartman to win the Flyweight belt. The other finish came from Jeremy Woolfolk as he brutally KO’ed Matt Boyce with a right hand, that I could feel in the front row. With a stacked card that had twelve fights and saw eleven finishes, I can confidently say, the night couldn’t have been any better. A special thank you to Nick Briggs and Austin Blair for your help at the event, and thank you to Cage Wars President Tim for having us. We look forward to the next one!

  1. Let us not forget how Hailey also fell victim to the 3 minute time cap…The first round went well over 3 min (about 3:22) where she took an extra 30 plus shots to the head. If the round had actually ended at 3 min I wonder if the ending result would be different 🤔
