After a failed stint at 185 pounds, former UFC Light Heavyweight champion Rashad Evans will return to the weight class of which he built his legacy.
Announced Monday morning by the MMA Bulletin, “Suga” Rashad Evans will take on fellow divisional journeyman Anthony Smith, who will be making the bump up a weight class as well. The bout will take place at UFC 225 in Chicago, Illinois.
Evans (19-7-1, 14-7-1 in UFC) will return to Light Heavyweight for this bout after an unsuccessful run at Middleweight in 2017 which saw the former champion drop two straight bouts to both Daniel Kelly and Sam Alvey. Evans is otherwise 13-5-1 in the 205 pound weight class and has amassed six finishes in those 13 wins.
Smith (28-13, 4-3 in UFC), will also be looking to make the jump up to 205 after his latest defeat to Thiago Santos at UFC Fight Night 125. Smith, unlike Evans however, has not ever competed at Light Heavyweight in his career. The former Strikeforce veteran holds wins over Josh Neer, Ultimate Fighter winner Andrew Sanchez, and former Bellator Middleweight champion Hector Lombard.
UFC 225 takes place at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois on June 9 and will stream live on pay per view. No main event has been touted for this event as of press time.
