Two high ranked Light Heavyweights will clash when next the UFC reaches Rio.
Former title contenders (No. 2) Volkan Oezdemir and (No. 3) Glover Teixeira will face off on a stacked Brazil card in May. The bout was confirmed by Brazilian sports site Combate on Thursday.
Oezdemir (15-2, 3-1 in UFC) most recently competed against Light Heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier at UFC 220 in a losing effort, falling by way of TKO in the second round. Prior to his title shot, the Swiss striker won his first three UFC bouts all by way knockout. His opposition included all ranked fighters in Ovince Saint Preux, Misha Cirkunov and Jimi Manuwa.
Teixeira (27-6, 10-4 in UFC) is 2-2 in his last four. The Brazilian last competed at UFC on Fox 26 last December, defeating Misha Cirkunov by way of strikes in the first round. His last two losses came by way of knockout to former title challengers Anthony Johnson and Alexander Gustafsson. Of Teixeira’s 27 career wins, 16 came by way of knockout and seven by way of submission, earning Glover an 85% finishing rate.
UFC 224 takes place at the Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on May 12 and will stream live on pay per view. No main event has been tapped for the card as of press time. The card as of now reads:
