One of the most anticipated Heavyweight championship bouts in UFC history now has a date.
Stipe Miocic will look to defend his UFC championship against number one contender Francis Ngannou in the main event at UFC 220 next year on Jan. 20 in Boston, Massachusetts. The news was first reported by MMAJunkie.com in the early afternoon on Wednesday and confirmed later that day by Ariel Helwani of MMAFighting.com.
Miocic (17-2, 11-2 in UFC) will look to make history in Boston as the first Heavyweight champion to surpass the Heavyweight title defense record of two. No Heavyweight champion in the history of the UFC has ever defended their title more than twice. Numerous champions hold this record such as Randy Couture, Tim Sylvia, Brock Lesnar, Cain Velasquez and Stipe Miocic. Miocic holds two title defense victories over Alistair Overeem and most recently Junior Dos Santos.
Ngannou (11-1, 6-0 in UFC) is coming off one of the biggest and most impressive finishes, not only in his career, but in the history of the UFC. Ngannou most recently faced Alistair Overeem at UFC 218 and finished Overeem with one of the most devastating one punch knockouts ever witnessed in the Octagon. Ngannou has finished every opponent he has faced inside the Octagon and holds the longest finishing streak in the UFC Heavyweight division.
