Takanori Gomi hints at return to competition in Japan under Rizin Fighting Federation

Considered a legend by most hardcore fans of the sport, mma veteran Takanori “The Fireball Kid” Gomi has had a rough couple of years.

After going 0-5 since 2014 and 4-9 in the UFC overall, many have pondered whether or not Gomi was close to finally calling it a career. None of the five losses were particularly competitive as Gomi lost via TKO or submission in all of those losses.

While an official announcement of his release has yet to come out, Gomi took to social media Monday posting a vague message.

そろそろ日本のリングに戻ろ🔥#大晦日

“Return to the ring of Japan soon,” he wrote on Instagram with the hashtag #NewYearsEve.

The UFC has no plans on returning to Japan anytime soon, while Japanese based promotion Rizin Fighting Federation is hosting a New Years Eve event that will feature a Bantamweight tournament.

With a career that spans nearly 20 years, Gomi’s days as a legitimate top ranked competitor are likely behind him. But given the amount of star power he has, that may not stop him from continuing to entertain the fans for a few more years.
