The Ultimate Fighting Championship will return to Madison Square Garden fully intent on delivering a spectacular card as the announcement of a third championship fight has now been added to the lineup.
Joanna Jedrzejczyk vs. “Thug” Rose Namajunas for the UFC Strawweight championship will be the third fight added to the UFC’s New York return card. The fight was announced by Jedrzejczyk on Fox Sports’ Twitter account Tuesday morning.
Jedrzejczyk (14-0, 8-0 in UFC) is coming off a dominant performance at UFC 211 against Brazilian powerhouse and former Bantamweight Jessica Andrade. Jedrzejczyk decisively took each and every round in their five-round affair, leaving little doubt to her detractors that she is slowing down. Still unbeaten, Jedrzejczyk will not only be defending her championship, but will also be looking to tie former champion Ronda Rousey’s record for most successful title defense’s in a women’s division at six.
Namajunas (6-3, 4-2 in UFC) is coming off a highlight reel submission victory over former Invicta FC Atomweight champion Michelle Waterson back in April. Namajunas made her debut in the UFC in 2014 following the conclusion of the 20th season of the Ultimate Fighter where she had earned herself a chance at the inaugural UFC Strawweight championship against Carla Esparza. Namajunas would lose via rear naked choke submission in the third round. Namajunas has since gone 4-1, avenging a loss to Tecia Torres, derailed the hype train of Paige VanZant, and dominating former Invicta Strawweight champion Angela Hill.
UFC 217 will be headlined by Michael Bisping vs. Georges St-Pierre for the Middleweight championship, while Bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt puts his title on the line against T.J. Dillashaw in the co-main event.
