UFC fight week continued with its second event tonight with The Ultimate Fighter Finale 23 and took place from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The UFC brought us another solid card tonight with lots of intriguing match ups including the UFC debut of Bellator’s “Ill” Will Brooks and the fight to decide who The Ultimate Fighter will be between Amanda Bobby Cooper and Tatiana Suarez. Also the TUF finale featured a grudge match between champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk and Claudia Gadelha this fight brings lots of bad blood and one the biggest rivalry’s in the short history of the UFC straw weight division.
The main card kicked off with the second UFC fight for the young prospect Joaquim Silva who ran his record to 9-0 with an absolute starching of Andrew Holbrook in the first round. Silva took a body kick, but immediately turned the tables on Holbrook and knocked him down with a quick right and after knocking Holbrook down followed up with hammerfists to get the quick KO finish in a short but exciting fight from Silva that didn’t didn’t disappoint.
Winner- Joaquim Silva by KO RD1 (0:34)
Doo Ho Choi puts Tavares to sleep and put the featherweight division on notice!
Tavares started off the first round with takedowns and landed 2 in the first couple of minutes making Choi work from his back briefly, but Choi got back to his feet fairly easily and then circled around with Tavares winding up with his back to the fence. Choi found an opening and tagged Tavares with a quick jab followed by a strong right hand that kicks Tavares off his feet and in the ensuing scramble Choi follows up with another strong right to knock Tavares out at 2:42 of the first round. Choi called out Cub Swanson in the post fight interview fight after putting Tavares away without much effort.
Winner – Doo Ho Choi by KO RD1 (2:42)
Will Brooks debut didn’t go as planned against Pearson.
Brooks came out with a decent strategy putting Pearson against the cage and going for takedowns in the first two rounds while mixing in strikes to the head and body but seemed to slow down significantly in the third round allowing Pearson to win the third round by outworking Brooks with more energy and pressure while keeping Brooks mostly against the cage and attempting takedowns while keeping busy with strikes to the body that seemed to stun Brooks repeatedly in the third round.
Brooks may have won but he didn’t do so in impressive fashion and has a lot of work to do in order to compete with the top 15 of the UFC lightweight division. He struggled with a game Ross Pearson and showed that he has a lot of holes in his game that he needs to work on.
Winner – “Ill” Will Brooks by Unanimous Decision (29-28)
