It was reported on TMZ this afternoon that former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones has turned himself in to New Mexico authorities. Jones was prosecuted around 10 am by the San Bernalillo Detention Center after a judge issued a warrant for his arrest. The details of the charge stem from a probation violation as Jones was cited for drag racing last week. Jones is currently serving an 18 month supervised probation from a September hearing. Jones has denied the allegation and his camp says he will comply with all that is asked.
Jones has admitted to revving up his Corvette’s engine at a stoplight but feels the Albuquerque Police force is targeting him. Jones was cited for drag racing on March the 24th including a license plate issue and a moving violation. This is a huge ordeal since it could affect Jones’s plea deal. Jon is scheduled to face Daniel Cormier on April 23th at UFC 197. Unless something drastic happens in the next 24- 48 hours there should be no reason Jones won’t be able to participate. A hearing would have to be held prior to the fight or UFC themselves would have to make the decision on whether to call it. As of now there has been no statement issued from the UFC on Jones or the fight but one more than likely will be released soon.
The UFC is once again in an awkward position with possible the greatest mixed martial arts fighter of all time. How they handle this situation will be a clear indication on their stance with Jon. They may be tired of the semantic s or feel he is receiving unjust and unfair treatment. One thing for sure is this is not the spotlight the organization wants to have on itself heading into a stellar lineup of cards. Look for more details on the story in the near future.
